Meet the Team!
Coach Roth
Message to the team- Balanced individuals are the building blocks of a coherent team.
Goals for the team- To produce individuals who are skilled at basketball and who function well as a team.
Basketball Background- I've enjoyed hoops from a young age ever since my dad put up a backboard above the garage door and bought me a book of drills that I could do on my own to help me improve (I think he did it just so I didn't destroy the house with my high activity level). Later my dad set up a dry, lighted basketball space in a studio barn on our family ranch. I spent many hours on late, rainy evenings trying to improve my shot, release speed and dribbling. When it was too cold outside to play I would spend time dribbling or laying on my back and taking practice shots attempting to spin the basketball as close to the ceiling as possible. I enjoyed enough success at basketball in high school that I went on to play in college and to coach since the very first year that I became a teacher (18 years ago).
Life Background- I was born in California, but my family roots are in a rural portion of western Washington. I've lived in or near all the major cities on the west coast of the United States, in Manila, and in Seoul. I've studied at over ten colleges and universities around the United States and England and I've worked as a carpenter, a re-modeler, a farmer, a rancher, a lumberjack, a guard, a driver, a film set designer, an inspector, a photographer, a teacher (of history, maths, science, humanities,
geography, physical education, finance, etc.) and a librarian.
Why do I enjoy basketball? For me, basketball should be enjoyable and it is most fun when the team functions well together. Some of the best moments in basketball (and other sports) are when you are part of the perfect pass-pass-pass-finish combination. Basketball creates opportunities for this to happen continually, repeatedly, and in a wide variety of unique situations.

Message: When I was younger in primary school, I was introduced to basketball by my brother and dad.
They didn't know much, weren't too into it, but they taught me the fundamentals of the game. I enjoy basketball because it's very competitive, forces you to work hard and also improves your court awareness and team skills. Sometimes, just shooting baskets -alone - helps me to get my mind off heavy problems. This year, a lot of new additions have been introduced to the team, and I'm expecting us to become conference champs once again. With hard work and practice, I can see our team becoming a championship caliber team. To my team, as a captain, I'd just like to encourage all of you guys to practice hard and dream big, because our team will help each of you to achieve the goals that you may want to overcome. We will be victorious, if we approach this season with humility, intensity and the will to be the best!!! Love my team.

Message: I was introduced to basketball by my friends during 7th grade. I enjoy basketball because it is a team sport that requires everyone to be on the same page. This year, I hope to take initiative and be a good leader for the team. If I were to say something to the team: There will be games and practices where you make mistake- where you screw up. It is better to forgot those moments. But if you take away something from those mistakes, it would be to know WHY you made the mistake and WHAT you can do to improve your weaknesses. Work hard. Lets have a good season boys.

Message: I was introduced to basketball by my underground basketball teacher. I used to go to a basketball court that was built in on the basement of a small building to practice basketball. When I started basketball, I was a lot shorter and less physical than my friends that I was practicing with. I spent a lot of time on my fundamentals and I developed into a basketball player. I enjoy playing basketball because it allows you to bond with your teammates on the court. I've always played basketball with the same group of friends and the friendship that we've created on the basketball court is something special. I hope to create the same bond and relationship with the team this year. My hope is that at the end of this season, our team will have great chemistry and success. As a captain, I would encourage every player to try their best during practice and games. I would also like this team to be a positive team that motivates and pushes each other in preparation for the games. Finally, have fun on the court because basketball is a passion! LET'S GO TEAM!

Message: I started getting interested in basketball after tryouts last year when I didn't make the team as it motivated me to practice hard and make the team next year. I enjoy basketball because It is a team sport which I can never get enough of and it also builds my character and who I am today. I hope that our team can get first place at KAIAC this year and that we all become better players out of this experience. I would like to tell my teammates to work hard and to never give up no matter what we are faced with.

Message: I was first introduced to basketball in the summer leading to 8th grade, which was my final year in Middle School, in Nagoya (Japan) where I attended Nagoya International School. Basketball was a popular sport, especially among the older guys, but our school never got far when it got to the competition. I've always been a football (soccer) guy and had absolutely no interest in basketball, however, until this inner conscience started to realize something. Basketball was the sport that would mark the end of my short, kind of meaningless "career" at NIS, because I was expected to leave right after the basketball season to move to South Korea in the winter. This sudden feeling that I wanted to make a change, and have this urge to prove myself and leave some kind of message behind before I leave eventually drove me to start practicing basketball, so that our basketball team would make it further than it had ever been. Practicing basketball was turned out to be more difficult that I thought: everywhere I went they had volleyball nets, soccer goals and baseball pitches, but a basketball hoop was nowhere to be found. Until, finally after weeks of surveying the city, I found a little sand-park that had a very old, 8-foot tall basketball hoop hidden in a little corner, almost afraid or embarrassed to show its presence. It wasn't a pretty sight, but I was determined to practice so I just took whatever little thing was given to me. I ended up practicing there everyday, for hours and hours; often times I would find myself shooting when it was so dark I couldn't even see the hoop. And other times I would wake up at 5 in the morning to practice before I went to school. To make a long story short, the more I practiced the sooner basketball season approached me, and try-outs came closer as well. I ended up making the team (for a sport that no one even expected me to join - I was known as a soccer guy), and was voted to take the role of 'captain' as well. We entered the competition and soon enough people realized that we were a 'surprise team' that dominated schools who were much more experienced than us. We earned ourselves a place in the finals for the first time in NIS history but then found ourselves demolished and on our knees to the international school in Kobe: Canadian Academy (CA). They were the school that basically won every year, and it was no surprise to anyone that they have won it once again. I was able to win the MVP award for the tournament, even though we got 2nd place, but there was nothing that could brighten up my mood at that time... I was disappointed and angry at myself that I wasn't able to win the trophy (I cried like a maniac), and there were no words that were able to describe the agonizing pain to wave the school farewell when I still had something to prove. I left NIS and moved to Seoul where I joined a much bigger school, Seoul Foreign School (SFS). After surveying around my new school, I came to the discovery that SFS actually participated in an APAC tournament (a tournament that included the big international schools around Asia to compete) and that CA was in it as well! Now my goal totally shifted and narrowed down to one purpose only: beat CA, and get revenge on the bitter loss that caused me so much grief. Basketball was supposed to be something short - just something temporary to prove myself and my ability to a small school in Japan before I left. I was supposed to go back to soccer and become my normal self again. But basketball had grown to become something much bigger than that... Through a lot more hardships and emotional struggle, I came to accept the fact that the competition in SFS High School was much harder than my abilities and that I didn't make the Varsity team. Now, however, I learned to enjoy the game just for the sake of playing the game. I still practice, and although I didn't make it to the Varsity team that would allow me to go to APAC (since this is my last year in SFS, there is nothing I can do to fulfill my goal), the grudge against CA will always be something that motivates me. I hope that our JV team will win the KAIAC tournament and I'm confident that we will be able to do so. Looking at all the talent in this school, there are definitely high hopes for the bright future of Crusaders Basketball. My personal message: "Crusaders on three: One, two, three..."

Message: I was introduced to the game of basketball through my brother. Basketball was never a huge interest to me until my brother persuaded me to try it out. After joining a city league team, I soon realized that the game of basketball was not just a sport. It is much more than a physical game played between two teams on the court. It is an opportunity to build friendships and to get to know yourself more as a player and as a person. That is why I like the game of basketball. Of course, I also love the game because watching all the hard work pay off on the court is an amazing feeling. However, what matches that is definitely the bond you build with your fellow teammates. I hope that this year we can come back and defend our KAIAC championship and treat each other like brothers through thick and thin. I would like to tell the team to work hard because all the attention will be on us to defend that title. LETS GO CRUSADERS!!!

Message: The sport of basketball is known as a fun and exciting way to spend time for many adults, teens and children. Although to some, it is known as a great way to pastime, to many others, it is seen as a passion. Of course, watching the game is exciting enough but playing the sport makes the game interactive and thrilling. As a teen, ever since I was very young, basketball has played a huge impact in my life as the sport went from a hobby, to a strong passion. In my opinion there isn't one, two or even 100 ways of describing the sport as it pushes the players playing to game to their limits. Now, even though there are many beneficiaries to basketball, it has some negatives to the sport as well. Luckily precautions can be taken to make sure the negatives effects are greatly reduced. But, even though there are negative effects, basketball is my passion and my favorite hobby. Therefore I truly believe basketball is my favorite sport because it allows for active living, community involvement and strengthening a different variety of basketball required skills. I hope throughout the season, the team bonds into a supportive family where players can depend on each other.

Message: I was introduced to basketball at a very young age. I remember doing Saturday basketball at school in elementary school but I didn't really find much joy in it. As I entered 6th grade, my friends and I started a basketball club and that is when I began to enjoy it. After about a year doing that, my dad took my friends and I and taught us basic fundamentals of the game. After 2 years of doing that, I can see that I have become a much improved player and a good shooter. I mainly enjoy playing basketball because of the fast past it is played at. It gets me very excited and hyped when I score or make a nice play.
My hopes for this year is to have a pretty successful year and I expect winning. Looking at the depth of our team this year and the different weapons we can use, my hopes are extremely high for this year's team.

I have always wanted to be a part of the team and with my skill level, the best way for me to achieve this goal was to join the team as a manager. As a manager, I hope to build the best website possible with the most recent results and statistics. I also want to keep good stats and to be a positive, helpful influence to the team. For the team, I hope that they recover quickly from any dismal times as well as being victorious this season. Let's have a good season, team and I hope to serve you guys well as manager.

Message: Im the JV Assistant Manager. I have been playing and following basketball for 2 years. My favorite team is LA Clippers and I love basketball because no sport invites contact and is as high paced as this sport. I also love shooting. Our JV roster is pretty stacked this year. I honestly think our JV and Varsity team could win it all if they want to. Good luck guys.
